The Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) organises the “4.23 World Book Day Creative Competition” in 2023 on the theme “Tasty Reading” in support of the World Book Day on 23 April to promote a reading culture. By integrating reading and creation, the competition aims at encouraging children and young people to broaden and deepen their scope of reading, and leading them to open the door to knowledge, widen their horizons and enrich their life experience through reading.

Entry Requirements
Eligibility
(1) Participants must be local full-time students (Primary 1 to Secondary 6).
(2) All entries have to be nominated by schools.
(3) Each school may nominate up to 5 entries for each category.
Junior Primary (P1 - P3)
Theme: "Food Story"
Draw a picture with crayons on the theme of “Food Story” to introduce your favourite food in a fun way or to depict a happy meal time with your friends and family.
Senior Primary (P4 - P6)
Chinese / English
Theme: “Treasuring Food and Life”
Write a book report on your own topic under the theme of “Treasuring Food and Life” to share a book, whether printed or electronic, by describing its content and sharing your thoughts and feelings to echo the theme.
300 - 400 words (including punctuations)
Junior Secondary (S1 - S3)
Chinese / English
Theme: “My Cooking Experience”
Borrow a cookery book, whether printed or electronic, from a public library in Hong Kong, and then cook the food or a dish according to one of the recipes and write an essay on your own topic under the theme of “My Cooking Experience” to describe the cooking process and your feelings. Attach a hand-drawn picture or photo of the food/dish you cooked *.
(*The hand-drawn picture or photo should be submitted separately on an A4-size plain white paper. The photo can be affixed to or colour-printed on white paper.)
650 - 800 words (including punctuations)
Senior Secondary (S4 - S6)
Chinese / English
Theme: “Memories of Food and Drink”
Consolidate more than one piece of reading materials on food and drink other than recipes (with at least one of them being selected from a book, whether printed or electronic) on your own topic under the theme of “Memories of Food and Drink”, and write an essay to share your reading experience and feelings.
1,000 - 1,200 words (including punctuations)

Junior Primary Category - 25 Outstanding Awards
Senior Primary Category (Chinese) - 15 Outstanding Awards ; Senior Primary Category (English) - 8 Outstanding Awards
Junior Secondary Category (Chinese) - 15 Outstanding Awards ; Junior Secondary Category (English) - 8 Outstanding Awards
Senior Secondary Category (Chinese) - 12 Outstanding Awards ; Senior Secondary Category (English) - 5 Outstanding Awards
Each winner will be awarded a book coupon of HK$500, a medal and a certificate. A trophy will also be presented to the school of each winner.
Deadline of Submission
On or before 6 pm on 5 January 2023. (For submission by post, the postmark date will be regarded as the date of submission. Late submissions or underpaid mail items will not be accepted. For entries forwarded by email, the date on the forwarded email will be regarded as the date of submission. Any email sent or forwarded after the deadline will not be accepted.)
Adjudication Panel
To be composed of education workers.
Announcement of Results
The results will be announced in April 2023. Respective schools of the award winners will be notified individually. All award winners and their schools will be invited to receive their awards at the award presentation ceremony to be held in April 2023. Winning entries will be displayed in roving exhibitions of public libraries from late April onwards.

The Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) organises the “4.23 World Book Day Creative Competition” in 2022 on the theme, “Surrounded by the Scent of Books.Joy of Reading in 60 Years”, in support of the World Book Day on 23rd April and celebration of the 60th anniversary of HKPL. The competition, which integrates with reading and creativity, aims to broaden and deepen the reading scope of children and youth that they are able to enlighten and enrich their lives with reading and wise use of library.
