Hung Kuen in Hong Kong

Description: | During the Second World War, northern and southern martial art styles entered Hong Kong one after the other. Hong Kong once became a major focal point where northern and southern martial arts converged and were even exported overseas. Hung Kuen, regarded as the leading martial art among the five sects in Guangdong, namely “Hung, Liu, Choi, Lee and Mok”, is still practiced today by many people in Hong Kong and overseas, and also forms an important part of popular culture in Hong Kong. This lecture will talk about the stories behind the reshaping of Hung Kuen in Hong Kong in the 20th century and will acquaint participants with the characteristics and transmission of Hung Kuen. |

Description: | The success of Hong Kong’s manufacturing industries owed much to the devotion and contribution of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The operation of SMEs is not confined to the activities inside their factories. Collaboration with various parties outside the factories, such as import/export companies, large manufacturers, other industry practitioners, internal contractors and outworkers, cannot be overlooked. The manufacturing operation of factories in Hong Kong has never been a closed-door business. Instead, it is a highly flexible system involving various production units and workers. In this talk, the speaker will recapture how Hong Kong’s manufacturing industries in the old days went beyond the boundaries of factories, with families living in public housing estates forming part of the production chain. |

Hong Kong Education from 1841 to 1941

Description: | The provision of education in Hong Kong during the pre-war period was a concerted effort of the colonial government, missionary bodies and Chinese charitable organisations. Schools varied in size, vision, religious belief, curriculum, medium of instruction and student background. Orphanages, refuge homes and free schools for the disadvantaged children; boarding schools attended by children of different nationalities including local students and those from Mainland China and Southeast Asia; and day schools in tenement houses on busy streets in town or European-style mansions at the tranquil Mid-levels, all formed part of the Hong Kong education system catered for people of different cultures during the colonial period. This talk will introduce the unique schooling experience of young people in pre-war Hong Kong. |
Indigenous Languages and Folk Songs of Hong Kong (Online Talk)

Description: | Before the 19th century, Hong Kong residents spoke six or seven indigenous languages, among which Wai Tau and Hakka were the most spoken dialects. The language cultures of these residents were different from those of the Cantonese immigrants who came to Hong Kong after the mid-19th century. With influences of economic development, urbanization, integration and other factors, the indigenous languages in Hong Kong have rapidly declined and are now critically endangered. This lecture will give a brief introduction to Wai Tau and Hakka as well as the folk songs of these dialects. |
