Latest arrangements on services of Hong Kong Public Libraries

In view of the latest situation of COVID-19, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will adopt further measures to maintain social distancing. From 15 July 2020 (Wednesday), all public libraries and their students’ study room will be temporarily closed. All book drop services of the Hong Kong Public Libraries and those located at three MTR stations as well as the self-service library stations (at Island East Sports Centre Sitting-out Area, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Tsuen Nam Road, Tai Wai) will also suspend services. Public libraries will continue to provide online services such as e-Books and e-Databases. Overdue fines will not be generated for late return of library materials, due date of reservation pick up will be extended and the maximum number of renewal increased accordingly. All library programmes will be cancelled. Please refer to the library notice on the special arrangements details.

A1: Library items with the status “Closed Stack” are shelved in stacks located at mobile library offices or the self-service library station office, and they can be made available to readers upon request.

Q2: How to access the library materials in closed stack?

A2: For any item of the mobile libraries, requests can be made at the mobile library stop by providing the item’s title and/or call number. The library staff will then retrieve the requested item from the stack for you to borrow or read at the mobile library stop during their next visit.

For items of self-service library stations, you may call 2891 9355 during office hours for arranging to shelve the item at corresponding library station for borrowing by the public.

Q3: Can I make a reservation for access to library materials in closed stack through the online catalogue?

A3: You cannot make a reservation for access to library materials with “Closed Stack” status through the online catalogue.

Q4: Can mobile library materials with “Closed Stack” status be collected from a designated mobile library stop?

A4: Mobile library materials with “Closed Stack” status are shelved at mobile library offices. You can contact the mobile library office concerned or the staff at the mobile library stop, and provide the title and/or call number of the required item. Arrangement will be made to deliver the item to the designated mobile library stop for you to borrow or read.

Q5: Do I have to pay for making a request to borrow or read a mobile library item with “Closed Stack” status at the mobile library stop which I frequently visit?

A5: No charge is required. You can simply contact the staff at the mobile library stop or the mobile library office concerned, and provide the title and/or call number of the item. Arrangement will be made to retrieve the item from the stack for you to borrow or read during their next visit.
