Modernism and Public Markets in Hong Kong
| Date & Time: | 15/10/2023 (Sunday) 3:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. |
| Venue: | Hong Kong Central Library (Lecture Theatre, G/F) |
| Description: | In the 1930s, the Modern Movement of architecture began to widely influence architectural design in Hong Kong. This talk uses government markets designed by the Public Works Department as examples to discuss the way Hong Kong’s public architecture has gradually shifted from the traditional forms and construction techniques of the past to a new era of modern design after the First World War. It seeks to relate changes in the repertoire of market design strategies to Hong Kong’s social, political, and economic contexts. The talk also outlines the chronological development of public markets and systematically analyses how public markets have adapted to the social imperative to modernise. |
