Description: |
The development of Chinese characters has a long and rich history, beginning with the pottery inscriptions in the late Neolithic period, progressing to the oracle bone scripts and bronze inscriptions in the Shang and Zhou dynasties, and evolving through small seal scripts after the unification by Qin to clerical scripts during the Qin and Han periods. By the Tang dynasty, Chinese writing system had fully matured and the art of calligraphy scaled new heights. As of today, Chinese characters continue to embody the wisdom of the past and demonstrates the charm of Chinese culture. The exhibition will use simple writings, images of artefacts and vivid illustrations to showcase the development and cultural connotations of Chinese characters. |

Description: |
Cantonese attire, with the use of indigenous fabrics and unique clothing style, not only preserves traditional elements but also incorporates the styles of modern fashion. The document display explores the changes of Cantonese clothing, presenting people’s livelihood and willingness of trying new styles over the past century through old photographs, newspaper clippings, etc. collected through the Documents Collection Campaign.
This document display is also one of the activities in the Chinese Culture Promotion Series. The LCSD has long been promoting Chinese history and culture through organizing an array of programmes and activities to enable the public to learn more about the broad and profound Chinese culture. To tie in with the Chinese Culture Festival 2025 organised by the Chinese Culture Promotion Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Hong Kong Public Libraries has specially selected a number of collections on the following three topics: literary master Su Dongpo, renowned Song poetess Li Qingzhao and one of the four great Chinese classics, Dream of the Red Chamber. In appreciating the spectacular performances presented in the Chinese Culture Festival 2025, members of the public can also embark on a journey to explore the treasures of Chinese literature through these collections where they can learn more about the two literary giants and the classic Dream of the Red Chamber to immerse themselves in the enduring charm, beautiful mood and touching sentiments in classical Chinese literature. |

Description: |
Xi’an Drum Music (Guyue) has roots dating back to the Sui and Tang Dynasties. It embodies the elegance of court music as well as the richness and grandeur of Tang and Song music. In recognition of its cultural significance, Xi’an Guyue was designated one of the China’s first national intangible cultural heritage items in 2006, and was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. The Music Office will curate a series of ‘Xi’an Guyue’ exhibitions to introduce the development, styles, musical instruments and performance formats of Xi’an Guyue. The exhibition will be roved at various public libraries. |
