1/ Preliminary Study on the Spatial History of Hong Kong under the Japanese Occupation

Date: 2023/9/9 (Saturday)
Time: 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Venue: Hong Kong Central Library (Lecture Theatre, G/F)
Description: Hong Kong was occupied by the Japanese during the period between 25 December 1941 and 30 August 1945. Extensive research has been conducted previously on various social aspects of Hong Kong at that time, in particular, the destruction brought by the Japanese military regime to the economy and people’s livelihood. This talk will introduce the research project of “Hong Kong under the Japanese Occupation, 1941-1945” which has been carried out by the Department of History at the Hong Kong Baptist University since 2022. The project team makes use of geographic information systems (GIS) to analyse various issues from the administration, economy, military development, public health to culture and entertainment of the territory during the Japanese occupation. The impact of Japanese occupation on Hong Kong, the role of Hong Kong in the war, and the lives of Hong Kong people during the war will be re-examined.
