The Second World War marks the watershed in the industrial development of To Kwa Wan. Most of its pre-war industries were obnoxious and dangerous, such as the processing or production of leather, fur, cow bones and fire crackers while its post-war counterparts were mainly light industries such as the manufacturing of cotton textiles and clothing. However, To Kwa Wan has seldom been mentioned in the industrial development of Hong Kong. In fact, the district was once an industrial area in which the streets were packed with factory workers during morning and evening commuting hours and lunch time. The speaker compiled a collection of stories about the personal growth and family life of residents in the community by interviewing the old neighbours of the district. These stories are marked by industrial elements such as small factories, contracting system, original equipment manufacturing and people who persevered to work hard and seized the opportunities to set up their own business, demonstrating that industries and people’s livelihood in the community are inextricably intertwined. |

Hong Kong was occupied by the Japanese during the period between 25 December 1941 and 30 August 1945. Extensive research has been conducted previously on various social aspects of Hong Kong at that time, in particular, the destruction brought by the Japanese military regime to the economy and people’s livelihood. This talk will introduce the research project of “Hong Kong under the Japanese Occupation, 1941-1945” which has been carried out by the Department of History at the Hong Kong Baptist University since 2022. The project team makes use of geographic information systems (GIS) to analyse various issues from the administration, economy, military development, public health to culture and entertainment of the territory during the Japanese occupation. The impact of Japanese occupation on Hong Kong, the role of Hong Kong in the war, and the lives of Hong Kong people during the war will be re-examined. |

Centred on Jin Yong’s martial arts novels, the talk discusses the breakthroughs in local martial arts fiction and how Jin Yong raised the status of this genre of fiction. It also gives an overview of the development of martial arts novels in the post-Jin Yong era. |

For many patrons of these shops and restaurants, their first visit might also be their last, rendering such visit a novelty rather than nostalgia. How can our younger generation find old time delicacies? Through pictures and textual descriptions in books, readers can not only search for bygone delicacies, but also savour the tastes that linger in memories. Like relationships, they will be more cherished when they become memories. |
