Flower boards are a form of traditional local craftsmanship commonly seen in our everyday life.  They are often used to celebrate shop openings, birthdays of deities, inaugural ceremonies, and mourn the loss of loved ones.  Having gone through changes and innovations over the years, flower boards and their crafting technique carry profound social and cultural significance.  The flower board crafting technique was included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory of Hong Kong in June 2014, making it one of the 507 items on the list.

Delivered by Mr Choi Wing-kei, second-generation successor of Wing Kei Flower Store (HK) Limited, and Dr Wong King-chung, Senior Conservation Manager (Cultural Heritage) of The Conservancy Association, the talk will share the stories behind this traditional craftsmanship and explain how flower boards have been sustained, innovated and passed down amidst changing social and environmental contexts while remaining within traditional frameworks.  Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Central Library, the speakers will also explore the cultural and social values of flower boards in festive occasions.

The talk is also one of the activities in the Chinese Culture Promotion Series. The LCSD has long been promoting Chinese history and culture through organizing an array of programmes and activities to enable the public to learn more about the broad and profound Chinese culture.
