Description: |
Kai Tak Airport, as one of the most important infrastructure in the 20th century, linked Hong Kong with the world and developed this small city into an Asia’s World City. In the 1910s, the area in the vicinity was initially planned to be an upper-class residential area but was later acquired by the Hong Kong Government to build as military airfield. Even the Airport was severely damaged during World War II and impeded the developing Hong Kong aviation industry since the 1930s, the aviation industry, associated with rapid post-war economic growth, revived quickly and the Hong Kong Government underwent large-scale development projects in following decades to expand the Airport, such as construction of passenger terminal buildings, extension of the runway and introduction of a modern air traffic management system. Along with the support from Civil Aviation Department and a multitude of skills and expertise of industry professionals, the Kai Tak Airport had long been one of the busiest airports in the world. With witnessing the many development stages of Hong Kong, the Kai Tak Airport finally completed its historical mission in 1998. This exhibition takes you on a journey of the brilliant development and glory days of the Kai Tak Airport through various newspaper clippings. |
