Flower board is a vibrant traditional local craftsmanship commonly seen in the daily life of Hong Kong. They are often used for shop openings, festive celebrations and rituals, as well as funeral processions. Over time, the art of flower boards and the craftsmanship involved in their making have undergone changes and innovation, carrying profound social and cultural significance. Since June 2014, the craftsmanship of flower boards has been officially listed in the Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory of Hong Kong, making it one of the 507 ICH items on the list.

This talk will be delivered by Mr Choi Wing-kei, second-generation inheritor of Wing Kei Flower Store (HK) Limited and Dr Wong King-chung, Senior Conservation Manager (Cultural Heritage) of The Conservancy Association. They will share the stories behind this traditional craft, introduce how flower boards have been sustained, innovated and passed on amid changing social conditions and within traditional frameworks, and explore their cultural and social value in activities and festive occasions, especially in the context of the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Central Library.

The talk is also one of the activities in the Chinese Culture Promotion Series. The LCSD has long been promoting Chinese history and culture through organizing an array of programmes and activities to enable the public to learn more about the broad and profound Chinese culture.
