| Venue: | Hong Kong Central Library (Lecture Theatre, G/F, Hong Kong Central Library) |
| Description: | Ever since a vast amount of neon light signs across Hong Kong have been taken down. The vibrancy of neon lights has left our streets, leaving the cityscape drained of its former colour and vitality. The research team was fortunate to get an invitation from Nam Wah Neon Light and Electrical Manufacturing Ltd. established in 1953. The Nam Wah generously donated to the team several hundreds of neon sign artworks dating from the 1950s through the 1970s. All artworks were hand-drawn by drafters using gouache, the vibrant colours at present remain. This heritage talk will share our preliminary analysis of the neon sign artworks’ history and aesthetics, including shapes, letterings, colours and symbols, etc. We hope that it will take people vividly back to the prosperous days of old Hong Kong. |
