The Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) organised the Summer Library Festival 2024 with the theme “Walking into Architecture”. Through a range of diverse on-site and online activities such as workshops, storytelling theatres, reading clubs, subject talks and book displays, members of the public of different ages were encouraged to broaden their reading horizons and deepen their understanding of the country’s architecture.
In addition to book displays related to architecture held in public libraries in various districts, a series of parent-child workshops on the architecture of the Mainland and Hong Kong and workshops on coffee shanshui art and paper art targeted at teenagers and adults were successfully conducted at public libraries in the 18 districts.
Parents and children learned more about the architecture of the Mainland and Hong Kong through making mini fotomo models, mini neon signs and creative handicrafts of buildings with Chinese characteristics together. |

Public libraries in various districts also organised storytelling theatres and parent-child musical sessions, where fascinating stories were illustrated in different ways to cultivate children’s interest in reading. Children learned about buildings with special characteristics on the Mainland and in Hong Kong as well as the techniques in making story-related handicrafts in storytelling theatres, whereas the parent-child musical “Writing Hero” performed in Cantonese successfully brought children into the world of writing and reading in a joyful way.
Children also participated in online live workshops to learn about the techniques on Western painting, watercolour painting and ink painting under the theme of ancient Chinese architecture. |

The HKPL also organised online reading clubs, where Mr WONG Po-kit, Jeffrey explained the architectural layout and characteristics of the Palace Museum in Beijing, introduced the public architecture in Hong Kong, as well as explored the architectural stories behind buildings. The reading clubs also invited Mr CHENG Po-hung to lead readers on a journey along the tram rails to discover local historic buildings and learn about their transformations through his book Early Hong Kong tramways.
