Thematic Block Loan to Kindergartens

Thematic Block Loan to Kindergartens

The Thematic Block Loan to Kindergartens is launched by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) to further promote a reading culture to children, families and schools. Books are categorised under six themes, namely Sense & Sensation, Concepts, Poetry & Rhymes, Art & Creativity, Emotion & Social Skills, and Early Readers to facilitate the selection of books by kindergarten teachers to promote reading among children in collaboration with the HKPL, thus giving children an opportunity to enrich their reading experience by gaining access to and reading different kinds of books.

How to Enrol

A kindergarten is required to follow the instructions and submit the duly completed “Library Card Application Form” and “Application Form for Thematic Block Loan to Kindergartens” together with a copy of its certificate of registration to any public library. Upon approval of the application, the kindergarten can select one set of thematic books for a period of two months. The loan items due for return may be renewed if they are not reserved by other kindergartens. The library will consider adjusting the arrangement on matters such as thematic book sets to be borrowed and loan period of library materials having regard to individual circumstances. For enquiry, please contact our Librarians or browse frequently asked questions.

The contents of the six thematic books are as follows, please click here to download the book list :

Sense & Sensation

Sense & Sensation

Children love to use their senses to explore new things around them, and sensory stimulation in various forms is conducive to their cognitive development. Books under the Sense & Sensation category cover children’s favourite items, including books about animals (such as the ones made of fluff which are in the shape of a little rabbit), lift-the-flap books that allow children to discover the answers by lifting the flaps with their little hands, pop-up books that can be open, etc. Parents and teachers can make use of this kind of thematic books to stimulate children’s audition, tactile sensation and vision. By learning through their various senses, children will find the contents of the books more comprehensible. Please click here to learn more.

Concepts

Concepts

Books under the theme of Concepts help promote the concept development of preschool children. Things encountered in daily lives including little animals, means of transport, daily necessities, as well as colours, directions and basic mathematical concepts such as shapes, simple calculation and ranking, can all be learned from these books. Books under this category are a good helping hand for teachers and parents. They are interesting and easily comprehensible, and by reading them over and over again, children will get a deeper understanding of various concepts. Concepts such as colours and shapes are expressed in these books by pictures while mathematics and other fields of knowledge are presented through storytelling, allowing children to understand such concepts easily. Poetry & Rhymes

Poetry & Rhymes

Language is a tool of communication and thought, as well as an essential cornerstone of learning for preschool children. The kindergarten stage is the prime time for children to learn languages, and effective language learning should start with reading. Through interesting contents, simple languages or beautiful nursery rhymes, books under the theme of Poetry & Rhymes allow children to gain a deeper understanding of different words or expressions, and help them cultivate their keen sensitivity to written languages. Art & Creativity

Art & Creativity

Art fills the soul with energy. Children’s imagination and creativity are always out of our expectation. With various tools such as a painting brush and polymer clay, children are able to create beautiful works, through which they express their ideas, learn to appreciate themselves and others, and cultivate their minds. Parents and teachers may expose children to art from an early age and develop their creative potential through books under the theme of Art & Creativity, taking children on the journey of artistic creation under the guidance of books. Emotion & Social Skills

Emotion & Social Skills

By entering kindergartens, children step into a new stage of vital importance in their lives, starting to build up human relationships outside the family. Amid unfamiliar faces and matters, they have to express themselves and handle their emotions on the one hand, and understand other people and learn more living skills on the other. This is a big challenge for them as well as for their parents and teachers. Moreover, emotional development and cognitive development complement each other. As the circumstances depicted in the books may be similar to the things and difficulties encountered by children in their daily lives, emotional connection will be aroused easily. Parents and teachers may make use of books under the theme of Emotion & Social Skills to promote the emotional development of children and help them acquire the necessary social skills. Early Readers

Early Readers

Children and adults alike love reading stories. Story books with pictures fascinate readers by pairing up beautiful pictures with interesting writing. Such story books motivate young readers to ask questions actively and think carefully, and help them remember the subject matters of the stories more vividly, thereby arousing in them a great interest in reading. Picture books contain short stories that embody great wisdom, and storytelling before bedtime is a parent-child activity not to be missed. Whether reading in school or at home, books under the theme of Early Readers are preferred options for children. Please click here to learn more.
