Emphasis on maps of the Hong Kong SAR, Mainland China and major regions of the world

Map collection emphasizes on different kinds of maps and atlases of the Hong Kong SAR, Mainland China as well as major countries and cities of the world, including:

maps of the world, continents, countries, cities and regions, providing information on boundaries and place names;

maps of Mainland China, major countries and cities of the world, providing regional information;

large and medium scale topographic maps of the Hong Kong SAR, Mainland China and major regions around the world, providing information on topography, relief height and landmarks, usually illustrated with contour lines;

maps on special topics such as transportation, politics, roads, geology, natural resources, land use and population distribution;

focus on early maps of the Hong Kong SAR and Mainland China for the research and study on geography, history and cartography;

satellite images covering the areas of the Hong Kong SAR, Mainland China and selected countries.

maps in different scales produced by the Lands Department for the study of architectural planning and geographical researches;

maps in different scales produced by the Civil Engineering and Development Department for the study of solid and superficial geology of Hong Kong;

maps produced by the Lands Department providing geographic information to hikers and picnickers, including landmarks, facilities, transportation and trails in country park areas in Hong Kong;

maps produced by the Marine Department in accordance with the specifications of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), providing nautical information in the Hong Kong SAR such as water depths, navigational aids and harbour facilities to port users or researchers;

statutory plans prepared under the provisions of the Town Planning Ordinance by the Planning Department for the study of regional development, showing the land use zones, development parameters and major road systems of an individual planning area;

gazetted Street Naming Plans prepared under the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance by the Lands Department, showing information of the streets including the name, starting point, ending point and length. Map Library keeps all gazetted Street Naming Plans from 24 October 2003 onwards and some of the old Plans published earlier.
