Thematic Exhibition: “Little Dragon Town – A Chinese Cultural Tour”

Chinese culture has a long and rich history. It left us a wonderful legacy like a star-sparkling night sky. On public view in the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Central Library, the Little Dragon Town is built over a mock hilly terrain alongside a flowing stream. In this exhibition, by selecting just a few shining examples from a amazing history, we hope to instil upon you, children of Chinese civilization, that traditions are not fossil specimens locked up in a museum. But rather, they are real and practical things in everyday life that can be useful, looked at, visited, and in fact, these are things contemporary people can all relate!

In the Market and Fabric Store we can find a variety of familiar paraphernalia that appear in everyday living in this country, ranging from the four world-renown inventions of ancient China, to the Tofu that may be served on diner table every day, make-up powder, wooden thongs, straw hat, decorative hairpins and clasps. Though such objects may seem mundane or old-fashioned, if we care to look into the history behind them, we would soon realize they still have much cultural charm, because they allow you to glimpse into a rich Chinese cultural heritage in everyday living.

Apart from the innumerable familiar objects, many legendary historical figures can also be found here. There may be sage master of virtue, military strategy guru, famous chronicler of history, sage of Chinese in tea, calligraphy master, literary master, forefather of medicine, or the first emperor from Chinese history. They are all gathered inside the Tea Shop, and you are invited to come along to delight in the profound legacy of Chinese culture, as you sip your cup of tea alongside the historical figures. Refreshed after sampling vintage tea, be prepared to navigate your way through the river of history, on a bamboo raft using a boat-pole in hand, or perhaps put on a pair of iron shoe to traverse the land of China, because the Surname Palace beckons to take you on a journey to find out the origin of your family name.

But the tour does not end here. Little Dragon Town has much, much more enjoyable scenic spots and interest places awaiting your exploration!

On the Main Stage, a series of variety shows with distinctive Chinese cultural flavour are staged. Everyone can take an active part to participate. In another corner, the Pavilion is set in evocatively appointed garden landscaped grounds constructed in traditional style, in which the interactive treasure-trove will be showing you audio-visual commentary programmes. The Dragon Chess Plan on the other hand, awaits you to try out your skills in commanding a force of general and soldiers, at the same time tease out the intricacies of the three most famous endgames in the history of Chinese chess. And of course, there is also a Cave. Legend has it that a mound of ancient Chinese characters from three thousand years old ago is hidden inside! Let’s try to decipher them by the four principle character building schemas. Finally, don’t forget to visit the Traditional Chinese Study built in the distinctive Chinese architectural style of a quadrangle courtyard residence. Here, you can pick up a book and contemplate in quiet seclusion, or share your learned knowledge with others. What pleasurable delight in hot summer days!

You simply cannot miss the chance for such a unique Chinese cultural tour! The Little Dragon Family are ready as your guide, to take you through this small Town on a discovery journey for Chinese cultural wisdom. So come on in, children. Welcome to the show!
