Exhibition Series on Hong Kong Memory (2019/20)

Exhibition Series on Hong Kong Memory (2019/20)

The “Hong Kong Memory” Project, conceived as Hong Kong's response to UNESCO's “Memory of the World” Project which aims to preserve historical records and valuable library collections through digitization, is a joint project launched by the Government of the Hong Kong SAR and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

A Hong Kong Memory website is built for the purpose, which is a multimedia website that gives free and open access to digitized materials on the historical and cultural heritage of Hong Kong, including text documents, photographs, posters, sound recordings, motion pictures and videos.

A series of talk on Hong Kong Memory will be conducted in Hong Kong Public Libraries from 2019 to 2020 in order to promote this resourceful website and raise the public awareness.

Past Activities

Thematic Exhibition – Successful Inscription on the Third National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage: Hong Kong Items
Date: 2020/1/8 (Wednesday) to 2020/4/28 (Tuesday)
Time: Library Opening Hours
Venue: Hong Kong Central Library
Description: This exhibition aims to introduce the four embodiments of indigenous Hong Kong culture - the Jiao Festival of Cheung Chau, the Dragon Boat Water Parade of Tai O, the Fire Dragon Dance of Tai Hang and the Yu Lan Ghost Festival of the Hong Kong Chiu Chow Community that were successfully inscribed onto the Third National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011. All these four items fall within the definition of "Social practices, rituals and festive events" set out in the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage adopted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). These items feature distinctive individual characteristics and exerting an important influence on the communities. In the current macro climate of urbanisation and globalisation, local cultural events such as these which promote community cohesion as they are handed down from generation to generation, are not only extremely precious, but also are hard to come by in a busy modern city like Hong Kong. For additional information, please visit Hong Kong Memory Portal’s online collection “The Oral Legacies (I) - Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong”.
