The subject talks aim to arouse the public awareness towards elderly health, the self-care ability of the elderly, and to enhance the quality of caregiving.

Chronic Diseases and Brain Health: Hypertension and Diabetes

Venue: Tseung Kwan O Public Library (Extension Activities Room)
Description: Do you know if your blood pressure and blood sugar level are normal? How are hypertension and diabetes mellitus related to dementia?

Hypertension and diabetes are very common, yet are also often regarded as “Silent Killers”. Patients often only realise that they are suffering from the diseases when complications like stroke, ischaemic heart disease or renal failure arise.

Through the talk, a registered nurse from the Elderly Health Service, Department of Health will discuss the risk factors, complications and prevention of hypertension and diabetes, helping you to reduce the risk of vascular diseases of the brain.
Practical Tips for Cognitive Fitness

Description: A registered occupational therapist from the Elderly Health Service, Department of Health will introduce some techniques in daily life to enhance your memory and help you fight against memory decline.

Through this seminar, you will know how leisure activities based on the “Six Arts” of Chinese culture, the use of assistive devices in daily living, and the application of compensatory memory strategies can all improve your cognitive fitness. Interactive activities will be included so that you can master these skills easily and apply them to your daily life.
Chronic Diseases and Brain Health: Stroke

Description: Stroke is one of the major killers in Hong Kong. But apart from being a killer disease, did you know that around 20% of stroke patients would develop dementia as a complication? This would not only affect the patients’self care ability but would also bring about pressure to their caregivers.

A registered nurse from the Elderly Health Service, Department of Health will illustrate the risk factors, symptoms and preventive measures of stroke through this talk. The nursing care after stroke will also be discussed.
Building Cognitive Reserve from a Psychological Perspective

Description: The prevalence of dementia in Hong Kong is increasing along with the ageing population. Many people are concerned about the disease and worried whether they or their family members will develop the disease later in life. Is memory decline the same as dementia?

In this seminar, a clinical psychologist of the Elderly Health Service, Department of Health will introduce the symptoms of dementia; explain its difference from the physiological memory decline in late life, as well as factors affecting memory. Moreover, self-help skills to facilitate adjustment and to improve memory will be illustrated. Through the talk, you will learn how to adopt proactive strategies for building up “cognitive reserve” and to delay cognitive decline.
Diet for Brain Health

Description: Are you worried about age-related cognitive decline?

Through explanation, discussion and games, a dietitian from the Elderly Health Service, Department of Health will guide you through dietary recommendations on how to build up your cognitive reserve. By joining the seminar, you will know more about the food choices for maintaining brain health and the prevention of vascular dementia.
Understanding about Dementia

Venue: Yuen Chau Kok Public Library (Extension Activities Room)
Description: What is dementia? Does ginkgo biloba or mahjong help in preventing it? Will I get dementia once I get old enough?

This seminar will be conducted by a registered nurse from the Elderly Health Service, Department of Health. Early warning signs of dementia will be introduced. The manifestations of the disease at different stages, the preventive strategies, the diagnostic procedures, and the channels for seeking appropriate medical advice will also be covered.
