Description: | Stroke is one of the major killers in Hong Kong. But apart from being a killer disease, did you know that around 20% of stroke patients would develop dementia as a complication? This would not only affect the patients' self care ability but would also bring about pressure to their caregivers. A registered nurse from the Elderly Health Service, Department of Health will illustrate the risk factors, symptoms and preventive measures of stroke through this talk. The nursing care after stroke will also be discussed. |

The manifestations of the disease at different stages, the preventive strategies, the diagnostic procedures, and the channels for seeking appropriate medical advice will also be covered. |

Patients often only realise that they are suffering from the diseases when complications like stroke, ischaemic heart disease or renal failure arise. Building Cognitive Reserve from a Psychological Perspective

Description: | The prevalence of dementia in Hong Kong is increasing along with the ageing population. Many people are concerned about the disease and worried whether they or their family members will develop the disease later in life. Is memory decline the same as dementia? In this seminar, a clinical psychologist of the Elderly Health Service, Department of Health will introduce the symptoms of dementia; explain its difference from the physiological memory decline in late life, as well as factors affecting memory. Moreover, self-help skills to facilitate adjustment and to improve memory will be illustrated. Through the talk, you will learn how to adopt proactive strategies for building up “cognitive reserve” and to delay cognitive decline. |
