Subject Talk Series on Hong Kong Memory (2017/18)
The “Hong Kong Memory” Project, conceived as Hong Kong's response to UNESCO's “Memory of the World” Project which aims to preserve historical records and valuable library collections through digitization, is a joint project launched by the Government of the Hong Kong SAR and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
A Hong Kong Memory website is built for the purpose, which is a multimedia website that gives free and open access to digitized materials on the historical and cultural heritage of Hong Kong, including text documents, photographs, posters, sound recordings, motion pictures and videos.
A series of talk on Hong Kong Memory will be conducted in Hong Kong Public Libraries from 2017 to 2018 in order to promote this resourceful website and raise the public awareness.

North Point Shoreline Transition in the Past Century

| Description: | During the pre-war period, North Point and Tsat Tsz Mui were two distinct areas. North Point was merely a rural area where there were only a power plant and an oil tank. After the war, it underwent large scale development and has become a residential area. Tsat Tsz Mui, a place with a mysterious story, nurtured a winning female swimmer in the National Games and pioneered the beauty contest in Hong Kong. Refugee camps and prisoner-of-war camps were also situated along the waterfront. Like Four Wan and Nine Yeuk (officially known as the City of Victoria), it is worthwhile to revisit the stories of North Point. |
Kai Tak - An Old Neighbor

| Description: | In the early hours on 6 July 1998, a ceremony was held on the air traffic control tower to turn off the runway lights at Kai Tak Airport after the last flight had taken off. Kai Tak officially completed its historic mission after some 70 years’ service and eventually retired into history. If you have been to Kai Tak Airport before, whether to depart, arrive, transit, transfer, greet or bid farewell, you certainly will not forget its passenger terminal, aircraft apron, 13/31 runway and so forth. You are cordially invited to this subject talk “Kai Tak – An Old Neighbor” to learn about the unknown stories of Kai Tak Airport, such as the misunderstanding in the naming of Kai Tak, the pre-existence of San Po Kong and “the street of landing” (officially known as Tseuk Luk Street). |
History in Miniature: Hong Kong Stamps

| Description: | It was more than one and a half century ago when the first set of Hong Kong stamps was issued on 8 December 1862. Although electronic media are now the common means of communication, postal service remains necessary. Hong Kong stamps have kept abreast of time in terms of design and printing and developed in diversity, making philately a timeless hobby. This talk will brief the audience on the design and printing of Hong Kong stamps as well as how stamp postage has changed over time in history. |

A Journey of City Relics

| Description: | Well before the lease of the New Territories to the British government, Kowloon City had been a flourishing place. Not only was it a strategic military base of the Qing government, but there were also customs checkpoint and pier, markets and villages as well as charitable and religious activities. The speaker will go back to Kowloon City in its early years of prosperity from the historical development of the Kowloon Walled City, Kwun Fu Cheung, Hau Wong Temple, Four Yeuk and Twenty-three Villages and Lok Sin Tong. |
