Objective

To stimulate the interest of children and youth in reading, to develop their reading habits, to widen their scope of reading and knowledge, to enhance their ability in language usage and to encourage parents?active participation in paired reading.

Programme details

  • Applicant may join individually or through the nomination of a school or an organization, either in the individual category or the family category (only for children of age 4 - 9).
  • Member joining the family category is encouraged to read books in paired with the parents.
  • Member will be given a record book once he/she joined the programme in order to record the books read, book reports submitted and books recommended. All records would be recognized by a stamp from Hong Kong Public Libraries or school libraries.
  • At the end of the year, member will be given a merit certificate to certify the number of books read within the period ; member will also be awarded a 'gold' certificate if he/she has read 100 books or above; the top 50 members who have read the most number of books will be presented prizes ; the most active participating school / organization (with the accumulated numbers of books read by nominated members) will also be presented a plaque.

Application

  1. Applicants must be aged between 4 - 19 and are registered members of the Hong Kong Public Libraries.
  2. Application forms are available at any Hong Kong Public Libraries or downloaded from the library home page (http://www.hkpl.gov.hk). When submitting application, applicant should
    • produce a valid Hong Kong Public Library card
    • have the application endorsed by stamp chop of the school or the organization if the applicant is nominated by a school/organization.

Reading Activities:

(1) Book Report - Star of the Month

Having read books borrowed from Hong Kong Public Libraries or school libraries, member may submit a book report of not more than 400 words for recommendation by public librarian /school librarian to participate in the selection of the 'Star of the Month' programme.
Details are as follows:

  • Categories:
    Family (Kindergarten - Primary 3)
    Upper primary (Primary 4 - 6)
    Junior secondary (Form 1 - 3)
    Senior secondary (Form 4 - 7)
  • Result of the 'Star of the Month' programme will be announced in the Reading Programme Newsletter and posted up at the libraries.
  • At the end of the year, all 'Star of the Month' will be awarded a souvenir. Besides, the best 3 among all the 'Star of the Month' in each category will also be presented special prizes.

(2) Recommending Good Book

  • Members may recommend good books to other members by writing a few sentences.
  • At the end of the year, members who have recommended the most popular 'Recommended Good Books' will be awarded a souvenir.
