New Fanling and Fu Shan Public Libraries Open

The Hong Kong Public Libraries service network continues to expand across the territory. Libraries of different sizes and categories though are evenly distributed between Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, they are also interconnected by the Library's automated system to provide comprehensive and convenient library services to readers of all age groups and from all walks of life.

In January, the new Fanling Public Library formerly located at Cheung Wah Estate and the 70th public library - the new Fu Shan Public Library were opened to herald the year of 2003.

Relocating from Cheung Wah Estate to Luen Wo Market, the new Fanling Public Library has been upgraded as a district library to provide better services both in terms of size, book collection and facilities for Fanling residents to enjoy reading and pursue self education.

Occupying a total area of 2,200 square metres, the new Fanling Public Library is well-equipped with an adult library, a children's library, a quick reference section, a newspapers and periodicals section as well as new facilities, such as a multimedia library, a computer and information centre, an extension activities room and a students' study room.

The Library carries an initial stock of approximately 120,000 volumes of Chinese and English books, 7,000 items of audio and visual materials, 4,400 items of reference books and over 150 titles of local and overseas newspapers and periodicals.

To cater for readers' increasing need for self-education, the Library provides 30 computer terminals, through which readers can access the Library's multimedia information, CD-ROMs and the Internet. In addition, eleven terminals have also been installed with the Online Public Access Catalogue. There is a coffee corner to provide comfortable resting areas for readers to enjoy refreshment after long hours of reading.

To meet the growing demand for library services at Wong Tai Sin District, the Fu Shan Public Library was opened on 17 January, joining two other district libraries, three small libraries and three mobile library stops to provide comprehensive library services to Wong Tai Sin residents. The Library was jointly opened by Ms Shelley Lee, the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Miss Choi Suk-kuen, the Acting Director of the Leisure and Cultural Services and Mr Lam Man-fai, Chairman of Wong Tai Sin District Council.

Situated at Fu Yan House of Fu Shan Estate, the Fu Shan Public Library is easily accessible by public transportation. It has a total floor area of 420 square metres and is facilitated with an adult library, a children's library, a newspapers and periodicals section and an extension activities room. The Library also provides computer terminals for readers to access the online catalogue, multimedia information and the Internet.

Initially, Fu Shan Public Library holds a stock of about 40,000 items of Chinese and English books, 1,400 items of compact discs, and over 70 titles of newspapers and periodicals catering for readers of all ages and interests. The Library also organizes regular extension activities, including children's hours and book displays to promote reading.

SKT Library renames

The Sam Ka Tsuen Public Library housed under the Lei Yue Mun Municipal Services Building has just recently been renamed as Lei Yue Mun Public Library, whilst opening hours and services provided remain unchanged.
