Eye on Public Libraries in Hong Kong --- Kwun Tong
|
|
The Hong Kong Public Libraries provides a network of 66 static libraries and 10 mobile libraries serving the 18 districts of Hong Kong. How well do you know about them? The Newsletter will present a new series introducing the public libraries in each district. Let's start with Kwun Tong.
Kwun Tong is one of the earliest developed urban districts in Hong Kong. It is a district where traditional Chinese village and modern skyscrapers coexist. In recent years, Kwun Tong has undergone a number of development programmes, including the building of community centres and reconstruction of old buildings, which have changed the face of Kwun Tong and enhanced the living environment of the district.
Kwun Tong is now served by six static public libraries and seven mobile library service stops, with Shui Wo Street and Ngau Tau Kok Public Libraries being the largest and busiest libraries in the district.

Community outreach to promote use of library
'Outreach social worker' may not be something new to us. But how about 'outreach librarians'?
Since early this year, librarians from Kwun Tong's public libraries have started a series of outreach visits to various schools and organizations including schools liaison committee, parent-teacher associations and the Kwun Tong District Council (DC), where they introduced library facilities, services, collections and resources, to students, teachers, school principals, parents as well as DC members.
Mrs Katherine Wong, Senior Librarian (Kwun Tong District) said, 'It is always our mission to provide a gateway to information and knowledge to all citizens of Hong Kong through promoting the use of library collections and services. DC's participation in the management of public library facilities has facilitated our contact with different community organizations. This helps promoting library services and reading in the community level.'
More proactive outreach programmes are lining up. Coming up in November, Kwun Tong's public libraries will participate in two carnivals to be held at Sau Ming Road Park and Shun Lee Estate Park respectively, where they will showcase library resources on sports and give out souvenirs to readers who borrow books on this subject.
