The Hong Kong Public Libraries has subscribed to two CD-ROM databases on ancient Chinese classical works, namely the Electronic version of Siku Quanshu (Wenyuange edition) and the Zhong Guo Ji Ben Gu Ji Ku. Both databases are available in the Central Reference Library for readers' easy reference. With these two Chinese databases, lovers and researchers of Chinese ancient classics will find studying or researching these rare books much easier and more convenient.
Electronic version of Siku Quanshu
The Siku Quanshu or the Imperial Collection of Four is the largest collection of literary works in Chinese history. It was compiled under an edict from Emperor Qianlong during the years 1773 to 1782. The whole series includes more than 3,400 types of classical works in China, covering a wide range of subjects including astronomy, history, geography, politics and technology etc., making it a resourceful and important database for hte study of Chinese history and culture.
The electronic version of Siku Quanshu (Wenyuange edition) is a full-text retrieval system, which contains the texts of the entire collection. The development of this database engaged over 300 technical experts and editors from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Zhong Guo Ji Ben Gu Ji Ku
'Zhong Guo Ji Ben Gu Ji Ku' is a Chinese database which contains ancient classics from the early Qin dynasty to the Republic period. The database includes more than ten thousand pieces of classical works, which were selected from more than a hundred thousand pieces of ancient works in China. For every single item, the database provides original full texts in the most popular version. A wide range of subjects on Chinese history and culture, including philosophy, history, art and languages, is covered. It is one of the largest collections of Chinese classical works that are of high cultural value.
