A resource centre for the general public, students, teaching professionals and working populations who strive for continuing study and self-learning in education and related subjects has opened its door to give teaching professionals instant and continuous teaching support.
Set up by the Hong Kong Public Libraries with the stock development advice from the Hong Kong Institute of Education, the Education Resource Centre (ERC) is located on the 9th floor of the Kowloon Public Library. In addition to providing a reference collection on all aspects of education to the general public, the Centre also offers information on language learning resources particularly in Chinese and English. In view of the increasing public interest in early childhood development, pre-school education resources are also available in the ERC.
Access to a greater range of resources
The ERC now stocks more than 13,000 items, including books, journals, electronic items and online databases and covering a wide range of subjects:

General reference tools on education, including educational theory, psychology, sociology, curriculum, civic education and school administration, etc. Also included in the collection are the course reference materials of the programmes offered by the Hong Kong Institute of Education;

Language learning and teaching, including linguistics, phonology and bilingualism, etc;

Pre-school education resources for parental guidance and teaching;

Local and overseas examination papers, syllabuses and proficiency tests;

Government publications on education;

Multimedia and electronic resources, such as language learning materials, electronic databases and Internet resources, etc;

Local and overseas serials on education.
An ideal reference centre for teachers-to-be
Miss Tse, a student in education and a practice teacher, has visited the Centre a couple of times since its launch. She has been impressed with the Centre's vast collections of reference materials on education, especially the topics of curriculum development and assessment, on which she is conducting a research. She also finds the environment of the Centre a good place for researching and studying.
Comprehensive facilities to meet self-learners' needs
In addition to the provision of educational resources in the ERC, the Hong Kong Information Collection is also available on the same reference floor in the Kowloon Public Library. More than 30 seats, seven Internet workstations, three Online Public Access Catalogue terminals and two language learning booths are available to serve the public. Besides, over 30 multimedia/ Internet workstations and two language learning booths are also available in the Multimedia Library on the 8th floor for the public use.
