Multimedia Information System (MMIS)

Hong Kong Central Library's Multimedia Information System (MMIS) leads you to an era of new public library service. Introducing you an unconventional concept of information access, MMIS provides an effective one-stop search for information and offers you a vast selection of digitized resources at your fingertips. MMIS provides for the first time, Audio-On-Demand (AOD) and Video-On-Demand (VOD) services in the territory's public libraries scene. Apart from that, it also provides a rich collection of digitized format of materials on microfilms, clippings, maps, posters, house programmes etc. Your access to all these digitized resources is no longer limited by the geographic location as users can search and access information once there are workstations networked or over the Internet. Owing to copyright and licensing issues, we have to confine most of the audio and video materials for use in the library only.

MMIS provides the following types of searching methods: Basic Search, Advanced Search and Image Search. Each of these searching methods serves user's different needs and may be applied to different situations.

Basic Search
Basic Search is the simplest way to search for contents using either a Traditional Chinese or English text string.

Advanced Search
Advanced Search provides a more precise and efficient way to search for contents by applying both Keyword Search on Title / Cataloguing Record / Content and various attributes, such as Author, Subject, Publisher, Type, Format, Colour and others totally 12 options in searching.

Image Search
Image Search provides a new way to search for contents based on characteristics of images, such as colour and texture.

From 22 December 2001 onwards, users with valid library card can place booking on the use of workstations and contents such as the audio-visual collection and CD-ROM titles through the MMIS workstations in the Library or over the Internet at its Website.
