How to reserve library materials via the Internet

Go to the Hong Kong Public Libraries homepage at http://www.hkpl.gov.hk.

Select Search / Reserve from the Main Menu, and then click Library Catalogue.

Select a type of library material, e.g. All materials or Books.

Select a search option and enter the search term(s). For instance, to search by title, click Title, enter the title as instructed, and click Sumbit.

On the list of titles shown, click the one you request for to display its full record and status.

Check the edition, and then click Make a Reservation.

Select a pick up location.

Select a hold expiry date. (The reservation will be automatically cancelled if the item reserved is not yet available by the hold expiry date. Please refer to Note(d) below.)

Enter your library card number. (Or Hong Kong identity card number if you have applied for using your smart identity card to enjoy library services. Enter all the letter(s) and digits without the brackets, e.g. a1234567 for HKID card no. A123456(7).)

Enter your personal identification number or the last four digits of your home telephone number. Then click Submit Request.

Note the message displayed on the screen to confirm if the hold request has been successfully placed. (If "No Holds Permitted" is displayed, please refer to Note(e) below.)

The library will inform you by post (or by email if you have registered for receiving email notifications) when the reserved item is ready for collection at the pickup location. For change of registered postal/email address, please approach the library counter.
For enquiries, please contact the library you have selected as the pickup location.
Notes for the Reservation of Library Materials via the Internet

The reservation service via the Internet is available 24 hours daily.

Readers should make sure that their registered postal/email addresses are correct before making reservations.

Reader can reserve a maximum of 6 items of library materials.

Any reservation made will be valid for a default period of 270 days. Readers may change the hold expiry date to a date ranging from two weeks to two years from the date of change. The reservation will be automatically cancelled if the item reserved is not yet available by the hold expiry date.

Please note that a confirmation statement will appear on the screen if the hold request has been successfully placed. Reservation cannot be made if :
- a reader has already reserved six items; or
- his borrower's record shows outstanding fines exceeding the limit; or
- the item requested is a reference material or an audio-visual library material.

Reservations submitted may be viewed and updated in "Borrower Record Enquiry":
- change of hold expiry date
- change of pickup location (for items in the status of "In Process" only); and
- cancellation of reservation (for items in the status of "In Process" only).

A reservation fee of HK$2.50 will be charged for each item. Once an item is successfully reserved and its status updated to "Reserved", the reader making the reservation is required to pay the reservation fee no matter he collects the item or not.
